About MACAO...

The Malezi AIDS Care Awareness Organization (MACAO) is a humanitarian service organization located in Northern Tanzania working in partnership with the local community, government and other local and international institutions to improve the lives of the local community through community  empowerment to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and other preventable diseases.

We welcome volunteers from all around the world who are willing to support and give care to HIV/AIDS patients, orphans, and widows.  MACAO would like to invite you to come work with us in helping to improve the lives of our communities.  We also greatly appreciate any donations in support of our efforts. 

The MACAO organization in Arusha has considerable experience working with HIV/AIDS projects. The main ethnic group in Ngorongoro district is Maasai people; nevertheless, there are high levels of immigrants searching for business within the area. Macao is located within Loliondo Division and focuses on two Wards, Orgosorok and Soitisambu. These areas have high unemployed people with poor health; many of them are livestock keepers. MACAO has made an informal research in area and discovered that AIDS is spreading in high rate within this community. MACAO has provided an awareness education concerning AIDS to this society. Loliondo Division in Ngorongoro district have been recognized as a High Transmission Area for HIV/AIDS, caused by a high level of human interaction between Business people and Maasai who are livestock keepers. Cultural practices and Maasai Tribe Structural Setup which include polygamy, hospitality culture between maasai age mates, diseased family inheritance, Female Genital Mutilation and traditional dance ‘Esoto’ between teenagers (boy and girls) which encourage unprotected sex.

Macao Development Needs’ Statement

MACAO project has provided HIV/AIDS education to various groups including, religious leaders, Maasai traditional elders, Traditional Birth Attendants, traditional healers, community based counselors, peers, and People Living With HIV/AIDS and the community at large.
